Hey I’m Drew. I’ve always kind of thought about blogging just for no other reason than I think it would be interesting, but never could work up the effort to actually do it.

Anyhow, I took this course for a number of reasons. The whole research aspect of it is really exciting for me, because I’m a history major and wanted to look at it from this perspective. Additionally, the thought of slavery in Texas is one that I hadn’t really connected, because for the most part Texas is viewed as not apart of the Confederacy. Plus, getting to go on field trips (as childish as it sounds) is awesome.

As far as my connection to slavery, I really don’t have much. Neither my mother nor father’s family arrived in the United States until after the turn of the 20th century. I’ve grown up my whole life in very diverse areas. Every area I’ve lived in (Virginia, California, and Texas) have all had a multitude of people so I have never had to deal (very much, at least) with racism or intolerance. I’d just like to learn more about the whole experience, as the amount you can learn from books is limited, as it’s hard to come to the core of the matter. Which, in my opinion, is the human, emotional aspect of it. That’s what I hope to uncover in this class.
