“Remember the Alamo!”

So, I really like the site cracked.com. It always has interesting (and hilarious) articles about pop culture and history, often pointing out how we are misinterpreting the world around us. So, when we got this assignment, I knew which site I wanted to check for Alamo information. Here’s the link:

It’s only a short blurb about the Alamo, but it just goes to show how these historical assumptions are deeply integrated into the entire nation. Again this is additional evidence of our attempts as a nation to romanticize or completely erase our history. Fortunately we have satirical writers on the internet that see publishing the facts as more interesting than continuing the fictionalizations.

This is interesting that most Texans are familiar with “Remember the Alamo” and all of the iconic images and names that come with it, but then I am a bit ashamed to admit that I have never heard of this John Brown guy. Also, his Raid on Harpers Ferry seems like it is a more honestly told piece of history than the Alamo’s. But then again, I could be misinterpreting this since I did just admit I have not heard anything about him or what he did until reading this blurb. I also love cracked.com. : )
